I'm sure they will soften up in time. Mine is an '86 with 32k on it. I have the springs set on the fifth (the highest) notch and they're firm but definitely not hard.
You might check the air pressure in rear tires - if you lower it a bit it can soften up the ride somewhat - but lower it too much and it will affect handling and tire wear...
